Two local community theater groups are holding auditions for upcoming productions. The Players of Light theater group for young actors concludes auditions today for a production of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Auditions began Thursday and continue 3:30-6:30 pm today at the Burns Church of Christ. The cast will be announced Monday and rehearsals will begin in October. Directed by Sarah Jenkins, Players of Light presents community theater productions designed for actors ages 6-19. The program presents two productions a year and proceeds are currently being donated to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University. Jenkins says young actors of all skill levels or with no experience at all are welcome to audition. She also is looking for volunteers to help with stage preparation and set construction starting next month. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a stage production of the 1946 movie directed by Frank Capra and starring Jimmy Stewart that has become a Christmas classic. The Renaissance Players are holding auditions Saturday for an upcoming production of “The Fantasticks.” Auditions will be 11 am-4 pm Saturday in the Anne Deason Performance Hall at Freed-Hardeman University at The Renaissance Center on Highway 46. “The Fantasticks” opened off Broadway in 1960 and ran for 42 years, making it the longest-running musical in history. Its most well-known song is “Try to Remember.” Marilyn Fair of Fairview, who appeared in 1,400 performances of “The Fantasticks” at the Sullivan Street Playhouse 1989-93, will direct the show. Performances will be Oct. 10-12 and 17-19. The Renaissance Players is a community theater troupe formed over 12 years ago as part of the theater program at The Renaissance Center. The group is now organized and chartered as a non-profit organization and presented its first production with “The Little Mermaid Jr.” for young actors last spring.
